This is an opportunity to help build a community where skaters can feel excited about coming out to meet fellow skaters and practice their skills together.
Here is what we've done in the past -- the future is wide open!
Open Streets is an enormous street fair organized by Washington DC, and every year it is run at a different location in the District.
For Open Streets on Georgia Ave in 2021, we had a booth, ran a free learn to skate clinic and did a public demonstration of teaching a class, where skaters from the street fair joined in to learn how to skate.
Events can be as simple as organizing a get together to hang out at a local skate spot.
DC has a ton of spots to check out, including pocket skate parks and skatable off-street spaces overlooking the Potomac -- I'm thinking of YOU, Mr. Georgetown Park!
We found this one especially fun: Petworth Porchfest is a spring event where dozens of bands perform on different residential porches all over the Petworth neighborhood.
In 2022, we had a booth at the main location, which we used as a home base to patrol the neighborhood, enjoy all the bands, and help prevent event goers from spilling onto the streets and blocking traffic.
In 2021 we had a "Rink Night" fundraiser at the Salvation Army parking lot in Petworth.
We took the parking lot at the Salvation Army on Sherman Avenue, cleared it of cars, set it up as a roller rink, hired a DJ, set up a grill and sold burgers and drinks to raise funds for the Salvation Army to help fund kids to attend summer camps.
Celebrate Petworth is another awesome local Street Fair.
In 2021 we ran a booth, taught skate lessons to kids, and checked out the fair while being an actual part of the street fair.
Another simple get together option is to check out an off-street trail, and we've informally done this a bunch of times in Rock Creek Park.
Other possibilities include the Capital Crescent trail (generally flat with a very gradual hill) and the Metropolitan Branch Trail (with some hills and a very urban quality).
